A place to call home

A home is where you feel safe, sheltered, loved, and surrounded by your favourite things. As the famous saying goes, "There is No Place Like Home."

Sarah has been a resident at Avalon Village for over three and a half years and would be the first to tell you that this is where she belongs. She had previously lived in a shared house for seven years and found that living in the same space with other people may not always work, even if you get along with them.

Seated by a shaded bench in the leafy Village, Sarah explains how friendly everyone is as she regularly gets interrupted by other residents who want to know how she is doing. "Well, thanks. How are you?" responded Sarah. "That's one of my good friends. I love the staff here. I couldn't have done it without their support and care when I had a procedure done last year."

Sarah likes spending her weekly Social and Community Participation by visiting the shopping centres, particularly Westfield Carindale. My favourite store is K-mart." The trip's highlight is finishing off the day with a nice cup of coffee at a cafe. "I enjoy chatting and catching up with the Support Workers," says Sarah.

Growing up by the bay in Cleveland, Sarah likes to be close to the water or at least visit Wynnum Foreshore regularly as part of Avalon's bus trip excursions.

Aside from being an avid reader, Sarah also loves to knit. She was busy knitting every one of her friends a scarf at the time of this interview, with only a few weeks left till Christmas.

You could immediately sense a warm fuzzy feeling the minute you step into Sarah's dorm. With her beautifully knitted throws, artwork, and a Christmas corner (yes, snowglobes, Christmas tree, presents, and sparkly lights), Sarah has truly managed to capture that inner peace we feel at our favourite place, our home.
